Packs: A Fresh Way to Learn What You Love

If you've opened Drops lately, you might have noticed something different, and maybe even done a tiny double-take. Where did the old learning path go? What's this new Packs thing? And why does everything look… cleaner?

Change can be surprising, even when it's good. That's why we want to take a moment to walk you through the brand-new Packs experience and show you why we're genuinely excited about this upgrade.

This isn't just a redesign for aesthetics (although yes, it is prettier). Packs were rebuilt to make learning more flexible and more aligned with how you actually learn.

Let's take a friendly tour.

Why We're Updating the Way Content Is Organized

The Language Voyage has always aimed to guide you step by step, but many of you told us it sometimes felt too rigid, too long, or not quite personal enough. It also didn't always showcase the full range of vocabulary Drops has to offer.

Some common feelings we heard from learners:
  • "I'm not always sure the Units on my path are relevant for me right now."
  • "I miss having the freedom to pick and choose as my interests change."
  • "The path feels endless!"
  • "I know Drops has tons of great content, but I don't always know where to find it."

We didn't want to change the content (because you love it!). Instead, we wanted to reorganize it in a way that felt more flexible, more intuitive, and more satisfying.

Previously, the way free users unlocked content was also a little inconsistent: some areas let you jump around freely, while others required strict order. That mix could be confusing. Packs fix this by offering a simple, friendly progression: you finish one part of a Pack, and the next naturally unlocks. No surprises, no contradictions—just a smoother flow.

So… What Are Packs?

Packs are a clearer, more compact way to organize the Drops content you know and love. Think of them like music albums in your library. Previously, you may have had to listen through several albums before finding the one you really wanted. Now, you simply pick the one you want, when you want it.

You can follow a Pack from start to finish, or hop between Packs whenever inspiration hits. It's all about giving you a friendlier, learner-driven way to enjoy the vocabulary Drops has to offer.

In short: this redesign brings more variety and flexibility to your learning journey.

A Cleaner, Simpler Home for Your Learning

One of the biggest goals of this redesign was clarity. Here's how the new organization helps you focus on learning:

  • A more visual, intuitive experience: we reorganized things to make vocabulary quicker to browse and easier to return to. Each Pack has a clear visual identity with a colorful cover, so you can immediately recognize where you left off.
  • Better progression: Packs offer a step-by-step journey. Instead of a giant list on your Home page, you'll see logical little "chapters" that you can move through at your own pace. More accomplishment moments. More clarity. Less overwhelm.
  • For free learners, this also brings a welcome bonus: a consistent, easy-to-understand unlocking flow. Instead of juggling different rules depending on where you were learning, Packs make it straightforward—finish one part, and the next opens up. It’s simple, predictable, and feels good.
  • More room for creativity: with this new structure, we have creative freedom to add new, fun content around useful situations, stories, concepts, or slices of everyday life, not just themes.

Unlike the Language Voyage, a Pack is short and completable, so it's easier to reach the end and feel a spark of achievement. Finishing a Pack gives you a clear win, which can be incredibly motivating.

Packs Open the Door to More Good Things

This redesign unlocks new ways for us to deliver features that wouldn't have been possible before.

Here's a sneak peek of what Packs make easier in the future:

  • Curated foundational Grammar Packs.
  • Special event Packs (holidays, travel season, cultural moments).
  • Interest-based collections (gaming, fitness, nature, cooking, etc.).
  • Skill-level based Packs (like Beginner - A1).
  • Adaptive learning suggestions tailored to what you like and what you need.
  • Better content discovery so you spend less time scrolling and more time learning.

The new design isn't just a new look. It's a platform for everything we've been wanting to build for you.

But… Why Change Something That Worked?

Simply put: as Drops keeps growing, we needed a structure that could grow with it.

The old layout couldn't scale. As we added new topics, everything became harder and slower to browse. Finding certain vocabulary collections took too many taps, and the learning path was too inflexible to easily add new collections.

The new Packs design feels cleaner now and gives us room to expand later.

We didn't make this decision lightly. This redesign was researched, tested, and refined with real learners. Most importantly, it's built to support a much richer, more dynamic Drops experience going forward.

Your Learning Experience Isn't Changing

Here's an important reassurance:

Nothing about how Drops teaches vocabulary has changed.

  • You'll still learn in quick, visual, 5-minute sessions that fit your day.
  • You'll still swipe, match, tap, drag, and discover new words just like before.
  • You'll still have the same progress tracking and milestones.

The only thing that changed is the organization, not your learning experience.

Tips for Navigating the New Packs Experience

A few quick ways to feel at home in the new layout:

  • Look for the Packs you're familiar with: all your previously learned content lives in the Mastered section of the Home page. Anything else you had in progress lives in the In Progress section.
  • Explore the new Pack categories: go to the Explore page to browse visually through every category we have to offer. You might discover content you didn't even know Drops had.
  • Follow the new, clearer unlocking path (for free learners). If you're learning on the free plan, you'll now unlock topics in each Pack one by one—giving you a clear, satisfying sense of progression without the old mixed rules. Every next step feels earned, simple, and motivating.Check for newly released Packs often: we'll be releasing new content more frequently now, and we think you'll love that.

Thank You for Learning With Us

Whenever we introduce something new, we know it's natural to compare it to what came before. Change can feel strange at first, but this one was designed with a lot of care, love, and future opportunities in mind.

The new Packs experience is here to make Drops cleaner, more inspiring, more flexible, and (most importantly!) more fun.

We hope the more you explore it, the more excited you'll feel about all the ways your learning journey can unfold from here.

If you have feedback, we'd love to hear it. Drops has always been shaped by its learners, and this redesign is no exception.

Here's to new words, new adventures, and a beautiful new way to learn them.

"Love my fun language learning and practice with daily Drops sessions, and monthly Challenges to participate in, and quiz mode to test contextual learning - brilliant! So much thought, consideration and inclusivity has gone into the design and function of this app, I can't praise it highly enough."

Lee-Anne Fox

"Great little learning app! I've learned at least 5-10 new words in Spanish in my first 5 minutes. Easy to pick up and thorough."

Simon Griffiths

"Great language learning app! It helps you get daily words done in a short amount of time. I would highly recommend using drops to learn whatever language you want to learn."

Colin Seladones

"What an amazing app! I’ve tried several apps for language learning and I cannot recommend Drops enough. I don’t know how a short Drops session can teach me as much as 1 hour+ of focused use of other apps, it’s like magic."

Merindel

"Amazing language learning tool. Excellent app for increasing vocabulary in your foreign language of choice. Useful for beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners. The repetition of the words makes them much easier to remember, and without the hassle of making your own flash cards. I have used Drops for two years now and have seen great results."

"Very engaging way of learning Yoruba in a stimulating way. Will be using to learn myself and to teach my child!"

"Less than a week in but using this alone with the popular one babbel working on German. When using just one app I got bored, babbel is not as fun. So using both at once actually let's my adhd do its thing but I still focused since I can switch easily between both apps and work in different areas. Also I like the quick little sessions makes me feel like I actually did something."

Diana Morris

"So engaging. I speak Spanish well, but often forget words in conversation that I know I should know. This game is fun and quickly brings back vocabulary I may have put in the back of my brain after not using it for awhile. Case in point: I spent 11 years in construction, then went back to teaching in English and/or Spanish depending on the teacher/student"
